Audi plans to transform its TT line from
being a simple coupe and roadster to a
sub-brand of sorts within the marque.
The German manufacturer has
previously toyed with different takes on
the TT theme ahead of launching a new
generation of the popular sports car this
year.
Audi took to the stage at the 2014 Beijing
motor show on Sunday with an off-road
concept for the TT that stretched the car
further than before.
It has a powerful engine, the ride height
of an SUV along with five doors that
point towards the car being a rival for
emerging sports SUVs such as
the Porsche Macan or Mercedes-Benz
GLA45 AMG.
Audi board member Professor Ulrich
Hackenberg says the concept points to
an expansion of the TT brand into the
premium SUV space.
“The Audi TT offroad concept provides
a glimpse of how we might imagine a
new model in the future TT family,” he
says.
“It is a segment that is growing very
fast. So to bring this SUV segment some
more emotion and premium quality, it
makes sense.
“I think there is space for such a car.”
Audi says the concept is powered by a
215kW turbocharged 2.0-litre engine
augmented by a pair of electric motors
that work as a plug-in hybrid system.
All up, the package produces 300kW and
650Nm, enough for the car to accelerate
to 100km/h in just 5.2 seconds.
Audi claims the car uses just
1.9L/100km of fuel, offering a battery-
only range of 50 kilometres and a total
range of 880 kilometres. Its batteries are
fuelled by inductive charging, allowing
owners to charge the car by parking
over a special plate as opposed to
plugging it in. ()
Technology aside, Hackenberg says the
concept’s style is key.
“The Audi TT has a specific design
language, it is easy to identify to the
customer,” Hackenberg says.
“It’s the round roofline, the big wheel
arches, the round shoulder. That is the
Audi TT.
“To bring the Audi TT features to other
segments, that is the idea.”
